Volunteering changes lives

Cast of Shipwrecked support 247Volunteers are the lifeblood of Samaritans and have been since it was formed in 1953. The work, that the organisation is known for and respected, is made possible because, every year, thousands of volunteers give their time to deliver our essential service to the thousands who choose to contact us.

"Volunteering with Samaritans is a positive enterprise in itself, but it can also be a life-changing gateway to new perspectives. Samaritans stand out from many other volunteer involving organisation for one reason – we are completely volunteer-led; the people delivering our services and running our organisation at local, regional and national levels are all volunteers that have developed through the organisation. Volunteers met new people, built strong friendships, master new skills, become public speakers, - found the confidence to try new things. Above all, Samaritans volunteers, whatever their role, come together for one reason – reducing emotional distress and the feeling of suicide".

With 201 branches in the UK and ROI, you too can play a vital part in what we do. Apply now to become a volunteer

Paul - Actor
"Usually Samaritans fits perfectly into my daily life. I often work evenings so being able to do morning shifts suits me down to the ground. The acting profession often feels a bit self-gratifying, so it's great to feel like I'm giving something back".

Eastbourne Samaritans support 247Bob - Engineer
"Support volunteers run the branch, relieving the listening volunteers from all the admin. I'm happy doing paperwork as I know there's more people free to take calls as a result. A win-win!"

Glenys - Educator
"Knowing that just a few hours of my time may have made a difference to a fellow human being in distress, and that I was there, giving time to listen, helping a caller to explore their problems - that's why I do it".

Alan
"Being involved with outreach work - that's talks in schools, colleges, community centres - makes being a volunteer really fulfilling. But answering the telephone and having the occasional heart-felt 'thank you' still takes my breath away. I'm proud to be a Samaritan".

Gloucester Samaritans support 247Joanna - Arts Fundraiser
"Volunteering is very energising because people are constantly there for each other. To hear what some of the callers have been through, I'm filled with admiration. They are so strong and brave, even if they don't realise it. The value of talking about feelings can't be underestimated".
