Aberdeen

Our image shows what we have been up to over the last year, with Ceileh dance, York conference, training pics, and our 50th birthday.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Ayrshire

Our aim was to raise awareness of our service by doing something different.

To include members of our local community we approached Kilmarnock Pipe Band and arranged a 'tea party' for them and their families. A local baker supplied Cup Cakes with the letters AYRSHIRE SAMARITANS 24:7 spelled on large ones and some smaller ones with green and yellow buttercream on.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Banbury

The picture shows two volunteers in the tabard publicity, with Ric Sanders of Fairport Convention and leading jazz guitarist Vo Fletcher at Banbury Canal Day.

It is a good fundraiser and publicity opportunity for us and happens every year at the side of The Grand Union Canal which goes through Banbury. Usually it rains, hence the covers, so we were fortunate to get the picture in a brief rainless spell, who are great supporters of the Branch.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bangor and North Down

The Irish night was a great success & the entertainment was from a family group of traditional Irish musicians.  The Father in the group is one of our long serving volunteers.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Barrow and South Lakes

The artist is a volunteer at the Branch and we have turned it into a poster celebrating 40 years of the Samaritans in Barrow (where incidentally Chad Varah served as a curate during World War 2).

Branch artwork thumbnail

Basildon

We believe this photo represents everything that we are striving towards, especially considering the strategy and getting ourselves out there into the community.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Basingstoke

We were thinking about 24:7 in terms of those middle of the night moments when you look up into the sky and wonder if there is anyone out there and feel totally alone and insignificant.  We were using the stars as a tongue in cheek alien reference to lighten the tone and also communicate the sense of Samaritans as anonymous supportive and all through the night - available when you think no one else is. The buildings keep it local and recognisable in terms of unveiling at as our own individual branch work.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bath

Samaritans is right by your side in your local community 24:7, to listen when you need them. They won't pass by on the other side!

Branch artwork thumbnail

Belfast

This photograph is of one of our "Samaritan" taxis for which we have used, amongst other methods, to raise awareness of the organisation in Belfast this year. "50 years of Being There" was our main theme for the Irish Regional Conference. It was hosted by the branch at the famous Europa Hotel in March of  which proved a great success for not only the branch but also the Irish Region.

2011 is a very important landmark for Samaritans, not only here in Belfast but also right across the island of Ireland as we are the oldest branch in the Irish Region. Our official birthday is 1 November 2011 and we have a number of events planned to mark this momentous occasion.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bexley and Dartford

In your darkest hour a Samaritan will be there for you.

Not to judge or tell you what to do, but to give you time and space to talk your concerns through.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bognor Regis

The photograph represents success in reaching out to local businesses for raising funds and awareness.   We invited Bognor Regis based family firm Reynolds Funeral Service to share in our 40th Birthday Celebrations in 2010 and they rewarded us by making Samaritans their Charity of the Year for their annual Quiz Night 2011 which resulted in a magnificent £1000 donation.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bolton

The photo is of volunteers taking part in a Relaxation and Meditation Evening which is held every month at Bolton Branch. We believe that in order to give the best 24:7 service to our callers we need to make sure our volunteers are feeling at their best.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Boston

24:7 is an appropriate time to remember why we volunteer.  The collage describes, in volunteers' own words, what, for us, is good about volunteering.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bracknell

Chad’s acorn has grown into a tree, forever growing, our volunteers the leaves that take their turn in the seasons.

Our stitch-skilled volunteer has literally woven our branch into the Samaritans’ bigger picture by creating an embroidered wall hanging inspired by the Quaker Tapestry.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bradford

Being part of the Samaritan family is a privilege.  Bradford Samaritans embrace each other and ensure our callers feel the warmth.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Brent

Samaritans in the branch wrote some thoughts about being a Sam.  We highlighted a few simple examples to integrate into the mosaic, representing the branch and community, installed on the outside of our building. While we were working, a visitor arrived for emotional support, and passersby stopped to touch the cards.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bridgend

After the suicide cluster events it was decided to increase our visible profile, the implementation of the Feet on the Street (the centre piece of the montage) has created a much higher profile with the younger element in our community, we are there every Saturday night offering emotional support.

We also visit prominent local events  such as the Elvis Festival to increase peoples awareness of our service, the school building represents our awareness sessions to older school pupils, the train represents the most recent national project. Finally the remaining picture illustrates the outreach support group activities for people affected by the suicide, we have two such groups at this time.

We have an active outreach team and we feel the montage celebrates their activities.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bridlington

Our collage shows some of the past Bridlington centres over the past few decades.

Out latest centre (the large eclipse image in the middle) is on St Mary's Walk, Bridlington right next to the East Riding College.

The picture on the right shows Janet the Manger of our Samaritans charity shop. Janet has an excellent team of support volunteers with the revenue raised through the charity shop vital to keep Bridlington and District Samaritans operating.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Brighton

We wanted to show the combination of Brighton and Samaritans by showing the symbolic Brighton rock (wording says “when life sucks”), our mascot on the beach with the pier in the background and the telescope suggesting that “Brighton, Hove and District Samaritans are always looking out for you".

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bristol

Our piece of artwork from a former Prison Listener.  The Prison Listener presented the picture at a certificate ceremony held in the Prison. It was his way of saying thank you for the support he received from Samaritans over a 2 /3 year period.  We think that it was his way of saying thank you for the restoration in his confidence through his work with Samaritans.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bury St. Edmunds

‘Helping You Weather The Storm’ has been a theme running through our advertising and promotional material at Bury St. Edmunds branch for the last two years and we wanted to incorporate that theme into our poster design for this years 24:7 nationwide campaign.  We wanted to create a fresh, modern image which would attract attention and get the 24:7 message across effectively, both to those who are aware of the Samaritans service and to those who are new to it.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Bury

HOWEVER ISOLATED YOU FEEL THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE TO LISTEN.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Canterbury

Thanet Pride - This event was our first outreach event when I became DD for outreach. We all had a great day breaking down the preconceived ideas people had of Samaritans and showing a presence amongst the gay community, letting everyone know that we are there for them.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Central London Samaritans

Whatever the time of day, whatever the weather, whatever everyone else is doing, Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to listen confidentially and without judgement.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Chelmsford

"Throughout the year the Chelmsford branch tries to attend as many events as possible to publicise our service both to potential callers and volunteers. This photo was taken at a local Open Day in May when our stall was staffed throughout the day and members of the public were encouraged to take leaflets etc"

Branch artwork thumbnail

Cheltenham

We had the idea to use flowers for 24:7 and have chosen a forget-me-not theme as the name works on all sorts of levels:-

Volunteering
Fundraising
Remembering someone you have lost

And remembering we are there for people

Branch artwork thumbnail

Chester

Chester Renaissance wanted to attract visitors and, in conjunction with Chester Zoo, decided on a Rhino trail, leading from the city centre out to the zoo. Businesses etc, were encouraged to buy a rhino and have them painted. The Duke of Westminster bought a couple and offered them to local charities and we were one of the lucky ones. We spoke to an artist in Southport and, together, came up with the idea of Empathy. The Rhino trail lasted about 3 months, there were over 70 at various locations. Empathy was in the Grosvenor Garden centre. When it finished they were put up for auction and that is how the nightclub in Liverpool came to own Empathy.

It was great fun at the time and we were really pleased to be involved.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Chilterns

We had speakers from Rethink who were amazing and the photo is of those two (Kieran and Sally) with Mike our DD for training. We also had a great display of work by vols such as painting, cooking ,wood carving, poetry, writing and pottery and Avtar a member of our prison support team is standing in front of this. The third photo is of Fee Bee who is on our training team and was instrumental in the running of the day and Joy is out Text coordinator and she ran a work shop. They are standing in front of the poster which we are to have put on the back and sides of 55 local buses for six months.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Colchester

Not content with hosting the 32nd National Samaritans Walk this year, Colchester branch will also be busy moving its operations into a newer building it has just purchased in the town's centre. The Samaritans Walsingham Road Community Hall, as the centre is called, was the scene of a lot of activity just recently as a team of Samaritan volunteers, aided superbly by soldiers from the Military Corrective Training Centre in Colchester, decorated the hall in record time so it could be used for the branch's annual general meeting - attended by over 120 Samaritans and friends.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Cornwall & Truro

Truro Branch has been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in the Queen's Birthday Honours List this year.  The award reflects our work for the people of Cornwall both in our Centre and out in the community.  Our director, Wendy Overshott, is sitting in our Sam Van in the middle of the photos.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Correspondence

A letter dropping onto the mat could be the lifeline that gives someone hope.  This picture represents Samaritans reaching out, by letter, to someone who needs us.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Coventry

This image represents the universal availability of Samaritans to anyone who may need them, especially if they feel as if other avenues are closing. Not only will Samaritans also be awake at 4am but they will be there in a variety of different ways: phone, text, email, letter or face-to-face so they can always be reached.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Crewe

We enjoy meeting the customers at Crewe Samaritans’ fortnightly run book and publicity stall at the local Leighton Hospital. This event has run very successfully for several years and brings in much needed funds, publicity and goodwill. Good bric-a-brac,jigsaws and smaller items  all donated add to the variety of the displays and "Samaritan" puddings, too, have sold like hot cakes! Every book sold comes with a Samaritans bookmark so the charity isn't forgotten!

Branch artwork thumbnail

Doncaster

This is where it all happens - our branch on Thorne Road.  From here we support the people of Doncaster 24:7.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Durham

Our pieces are three pieces of artwork from The Durham Federation ( two Secondary Schools) that were struggling to survive, however have made massive positive inroads in recent times.

This first piece is from a year 9 student from Fyndoune Community College.

The second is from a year 8 student from Durham Community Business College.

The third is from a year 9 student from Fyndoune Community College.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Exeter, Mid & East Devon

“Rising to the challenge”

Our hugely successful sponsored abseil from the top of the old Debenhams building in Exeter, which took place last year.  We raised thousands and also generated a great deal of awareness (it probably helped having the police marching band piping away at ground level!).

Branch artwork thumbnail

Farnborough

The rationale behind it is to show “the outside world” a view of their branch in operation that they wouldn’t normally get to see – what the other end of the line looks like.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Festival

Branch artwork thumbnail

Grantham

The people chain within the artwork depicts how Grantham Samaritans supports those locally in crisis – represented by the young man in the centre of the image. The prominence of Grantham railway station represents our involvement in the national rail project and its importance to our area due to railway suicides.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Grimsby

These pictures depict Grimsby as they are taken of our famous Lions of Weelsby Woods wearing a Samaritans baseball cap.  The landmark at which the lions stand is a very well know lush green park woodland area open to the public 24:7. Which we thought was apt within the remit of this years event.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Guernsey

Two volunteers standing behind a stall in town during Carnival Week as balloons and leaflets are given out. We get volunteer enquiries and people who want to talk to a Samaritan in confidence. We are there even when it is raining as can be seen from the photo.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Guilford

The piece represents the fact that at Guildford the combined Samaritans experience in the branch amongst current volunteers and Listeners is over 1,000 years.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Halifax

The day and night photo of the town represents the 24 hour service offered to the community by our dedicated listening volunteers. Halifax has a fantastic shop providing the funds that enable us to continue offering callers various ways to share their feelings. Text , email, face to face and phones. We also have a very dedicated team who go into Armley Prison to support prisoners and the listeners.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Harrogate

From Susan Beazley, an artist and volunteer: “A few years ago I took a call while on a normal Samaritan day duty in the Harrogate branch; the call deeply affected me.  I spoke with my partner and leader, but the caller’s despair stayed with me. A short while later, I discovered that one of my daughter’s was self-harming, and that is what prompted me to paint my way out of my feelings about this difficult call."

"The bathroom shutters provide privacy. They are reflected as prison bars – the prison of the mind in distress and despair.  The mirror was chosen as it is full of symbolism and here marks the membrane between this world and the world of anguish or even the next world.  The ghostly mirror image looks directly at us – teenagers and young people seldom give such direct eye contact – but this young person holds us to some account."

Branch artwork thumbnail

Harrow

The page represents a number of modified and original posters used for recruitment and to publicise the service the branch offers. They demonstrate our efforts to connect with young people, the elderly, different community and ethnic groups and to raise general awareness of Samaritans.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Havering

Havering Samaritans had just had the garden landscaped owing to the removal of a tree that was heaving up the garden and pavement. At a committee meeting it was decided that as the garden was bare it would be an ideal opportunity you make a visual statement for the 24 July. One of our volunteers offered to do the job and you can see the excellent result.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Huddersfield

This is where it all happens. From here we support the people of Huddersfield 24:7.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Hull

This was taken during a Deputy Directors meeting. As this was taken at around 8pm there were no passers-by to give leaflets etc. to – so we thought a group of Sam’s enjoying a spring evening in front of the branch building was the next best thing! We do lots of outreach work at our branch and we are always trying to raise awareness of our service in the local area. Les Maul, our Director, is far right in the group (wearing a blue shirt).

Branch artwork thumbnail

Ipswich and East Suffolk

Ipswich Branch are acknowledging 24:7 this year by way of a Skydive.  Four of their volunteers; Jac, Sophia, Wendy and Cathy will take to the skies to raise awareness and funds for the branch.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Isle of Man

Our piece of artwork is a cake. The base layer represents the foundation of our
branch which is the volunteers, without them the branch/cake would collapse. The
rest of the cake shows all the ways to get in touch with Samaritans and that we are
available 24:7.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Isle of Wight

The collage shows the front of the lovely new Isle of Wight Centre that we now operate from. The front windows contain photos of "Swim the Solent with Samaritans", an annual event organized to raise funds for the branch. The swim started with a single swimmer in 2007 [that was me, I was branch Director then] and last year there were 30 swimmers supported by kayaks, ribs and lifeboats. In 2010, with Gift Aid, the swimmers raised over £25,000 in sponsorship for the branch. 2011 is our fifth swim and there will again be 30 swimmers. The support we receive from the local community and those from further afield who come to the island to swim with us is invaluable.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Jersey

This photo shows some of our volunteers after receiving the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.  The presentation was made by the Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey at Government House in Jersey.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Kettering

OUR FAMILY - Our family of Samaritans at Kettering branch take time out from the serious business of listening to visit the local family leisure park which is visited by families from all over our region.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Kingston

I took this photo on my way in to do a nightshift.  It was intended to symbolize that we are always open - any time day or night.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Branch artwork thumbnail

Leeds

Leeds are a 24:7 branch and the photos in the image are of our operations room on a typical day and night shift. The images are placed over a background of a map of the Leeds area.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Leicester

It represents just a part of the extensive media coverage concerning our fair branch over the last year.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Luton

Our piece shows a few things we do outside the Branch: from stress down day, St George's Day ,University Open Day, 24:7 balloon race, and Luton Carnival which is the biggest one day carnival in Europe. We have been involved in the carnival since 1992 always at the end of the line and pleased to have won many prizes for this. Also included in the montage is the turning on of the Christmas lights in Luton and teddy bears and tombola.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Macclesfield

Macclesfield Branch is celebrating 24:7 with our annual Sponsored Dog Walk! This event is a huge success for us and we hope that this year the event will be even bigger and better.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Manchester

Manchester Samaritans obtained lots of media coverage after we circulated a press release about the increase in callers we had received the previous year.

A great day was spent filming in our branch with the news crews from ITV and the BBC and doing interviews with local radio stations. Not only was the publicity great but our volunteers loved the filming and being on the television!

We are definitely now looking to relocate our Branch to Hollywood!

Branch artwork thumbnail

Mansfield and District

Our Charity Shop is such a fantastic ambassador for everything we stand for, plus it is integral to helping keep the Branch running.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Medway

We have come up with this photo comprising ears that belong to some of the Medway Samaritans. We think it sums up what we do and refers to 24:7.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Milton Keynes

IF EVERYTHING SEEMS GREY WHY NOT LET SAMARITANS TRY TO PUT SOME COLOUR BACK INTO YOUR LIFE  TALK TO US 24:7

Branch artwork thumbnail

Newbury

The piece shows several examples of our volunteers out and about, having fun, but also working hard to build awareness of Samaritans in the Newbury area, while raising the much needed funds to allow our work to continue. The finish line photo show one of our volunteers completing a 200km Amazon Jungle race, raising £2,500 for us. Balloons were of particular significance in 2010 as we used the theme of “Ready to Burst” on National Awareness Day with a balloon tombola where members of the public could burst balloons and win prizes donated by local businesses. The event was hard work, good fun and a great success.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Newport & Gwent

This photo was taken at a local carnival where the theme was 'Go Green'. We married up the green recycling with .the Samaritans colours.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Newry

Our piece was recently compiled by four young students from St. Malachy’s High School in Castlewellan, Co. Down. St. Malachy’s High School is in the hinterland of the Mountains of Mourne, here on the south east coast of Northern Ireland. The poster project came about via the contact of our Director, Aidan, and Mr. Tony Keeley a dedicated form teacher within the school and who has facilitated our Outreach programme within the school etc.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Northallerton

The photograph is of Samaritans volunteers from Northallerton preparing for a 10.5 mile walk from Reeth to Richmond with their charity partners Sodexho and forces personnel from Catterick Garrison.

Catterick Garrison falls within the catchment area for Northallerton and the branch has engaged in a lot of publicity on the Garrison (which will soon be 25,000 strong) to demonstrate Samaritans 24:7 support for forces personnel and their families.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Northumbria

Children in a Northumberland Church of England First School discussed why and how someone would contact Samaritans.

As you can see from the poster, children as young as 8 years old understand that people can face many challenges in their lives and that Samaritans can offer “around the clock “ emotional support to those individuals who need it. The children who made this poster represent our future and no doubt they will have their own difficulties to face. Hopefully this poster will remind them and others that there is someone out there to turn to – someone who cares.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Nottingham

We thought that having a picture taken in front of Robin Hood would visually represent Nottingham and including a collection bucket (in front of Robin Hood who stole from the rich and gave to the poor) was rather symbolic.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Orkney

Orkney Branch 24:7 ‘Putting the pieces together’ artwork – the words behind the picture.

Orkney branch sees itself as a small but important cog, contributing to Samaritans 24:7 service as well as raising awareness through our presence in a very rural and physically isolated community.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Oxford

“I thought about what Samaritans means to people like me. The strongest message I think, is one of help and support. So I chose to visually represent this by having a hand reaching out to help another. I also thought about the current campaign of 'Putting the Pieces Together 24:7' and how I could get this message across. I interpreted putting the pieces together as putting back together the pieces of someone's shattered life and/or hope. So the shattered effect represents the pieces of someone's shattered life coming back together. The numbers '24' and '7' on the hands represent the combination of these two elements to form the solution.”

Branch artwork thumbnail

Plymouth

This is on top of Plymouth Hoe, not far from where Drake played his famous game of bowls, just before the start of Plymouth's half marathon. The group ran at different speeds, so didn't finish together. A lot of sponsorship was generated and of course, this raised awareness of our work.

Preston Samaritans at work in the local library...publicity, recruitment and face to face all in a 2 hour period. We even met a listener who was pleased to have some contact with ordinary Samaritans. Every library in the area has received outreach support this year.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Reading

This photo shows our Directorate and our SamVan. It was taken at the conclusion of the directorate retreat  at Basingstoke where we were able to consider in detail something that we wanted to change in Reading Branch. The subject that we discussed was the implementation of our outreach activity, Feet on the Street. The SamVan is vital in our outreach work and gives us a better presence in the community.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Reigate

This is a great achievement for our branch, we think, and which promises much for the coming year. Finally we have a patron - in fact we have two.  Fulham Football Club captain Danny Murphy and his wife, actress Joanna Taylor.

Rochdale, Oldham & District

A collection of photo’s showing volunteers and supporters of Rochdale, Oldham and District Samaritans having FUN – dRaising money for the branch over 16 years.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Rotherham

The collage gives a snap-shot of the imaginative ways in which the volunteers of Rotherham Samaritans raise funds. When fund raising we always try to be enthusiastic, creative and unusual. In the past our volunteers have raised funds by abseiling, fire-walking, dressing as a stress ball and numerous other ways. We appreciate that in this difficult financial climate, people are not able to donate as freely as they once could.  We hope that by putting extra vigour into our fundraising, the people of Rotherham will appreciate our efforts and see us as a worthy recipient.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Scarborough

The main image shows Jane Horrocks opening our new centre on 12 July 2008.
We asked Jane to officiate as she starred in the 1998 film Little Voice, with Ewan McGregor, Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn.
The film was partly shot in a derelict old confectionery warehouse which Scarborough Samaritans subsequently acquired and demolished, to make way for a purpose-built centre.
So the smaller images below the main picture show, from left to right, the old building, fundraisers, the laying of the first brick by Alan Ayckbourn's wife Heather (branch patron) and Jane's arrival at the centre in the Samaritans Smart car.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Scunthorpe

A cake was baked to celebrate the launch of SMS at our branch.  It is presented against a random arrangement of Samaritans publicity material.

"We are keen to support callers by whatever means they are most comfortable with and we know that people who use the SMS service are at high risk and in crisis.  Our volunteers are positive about providing SMS support as part of Samaritans 24:7 service and the cake celebrates its launch in our branch".

Branch artwork thumbnail

Sheffield

This artwork was created by Isabel 812, Samaritan and also a local artist. it represents the diversity of our volunteers, and the fact that we are there 24 hours a day, everyday, whenever we are needed. The artwork incorporates the symbol of our city of Sheffield, 'Steel City'.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Slough

'Volunteers from Slough Windsor and Maidenhead - different places - different people - same care - same willingness to listen.'

Branch artwork thumbnail

Solihull

The piece represents the sense of achievement we feel at Solihull Branch now that we have embraced a further medium by which we can support our callers.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Southampton

We have chosen this photo as we feel it really represents how we see our volunteers - integral to every part of our branch. Whether taking calls, doing admin work or, as the photo shows, out fundraising at local events, our volunteers make our branch 'tick'.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Southend-on-Sea

We wanted to show the work of our shop as without it we wouldn’t be able to operate 24:7.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Southport

In early 2011 Southport & District Branch Samaritans commissioned Southport College Creative & Media students to create a DVD for Information Evenings. The students pitched their ideas for the DVD to Samaritans volunteers and then filmed, edited, directed and produced the chosen idea with volunteers taking a starring role! Southport & District Branch Samaritans now have a brand new DVD to inspire potential volunteers at their Information Evenings and Southport College students got some great industry experience.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Sunderland

What keeps our branch running 24:7?  It is the efforts and dedication of our volunteers.

In this piece, each card contains the name and number of a volunteer at Sunderland Samaritans.  In putting the pieces together I have tried to show how important it is that we can rely on and support each other so the whole structure can support our callers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You cannot see every volunteer’s name but they are all there and all are equally important.

Branch artwork thumbnail

Swansea

There are  a number of ongoing initiatives at Swansea and I wanted to highlight the good work of our volunteers.

@ the Royal Welsh - Swansea Branch support this event every year. It is one of the largest country shows in Wales.

@ 24:7 - Swansea had a visit from the 24:7 car and were lucky enough to have two celebrities from a local radio stations - Shani and Kevin Johns to drive it on to Bridgend.

@ schools and colleges - Swansea have a good working relationship with local schools and regularly visit to tell the children about what Samaritans do.

@ the samaritans walk - some of our volunteers completed last years walk.

@ training - this is a selection of new volunteer during sit1 training.

@ Panduwwasnuwara Branch, Sri Lanka - this is our twin branch and one of our volunteers (William) has visited there.

@ outreach - the Passion - volunteers were part of this weekend event. Michael Sheen had planned this event for over 2 years. There had been a Passion in Port Talbot for many year but had stopped. He wanted to revive the experience.

The Samaritans of Weston Super Mare and North Somerset

This heart-warming letter is from a caller whom we supported through a difficult time. To know that someone has benefited from feeling listened to reminds us just why we volunteer and spurs us on to keep finding new ways of letting people know that they do not have to suffer in silence.

It is an original pencil and charcoal drawing by a local artist and is entitled A Call For Help.

There is something a little disturbing about the picture, but you're drawn to the face and the humanity and as you look I think you see the struggle and turmoil that is going on. The small handset being used places the image very much in the modern age, though the emotion invoked is timeless.

“We are keen to reach out to young and vulnerable people in particular young men. We intend to allow volunteers to take the car and park it about our area - in supermarket carparks, station forecourts, football grounds and sports venues, town centres in the evening and night, villages in our rural areas, colleges, doctors surgeries wherever there is footfall and free space. Volunteers will be encouraged to come up with ideas and venues and are already doing so. We also want to start 'Feet on the street'”.

North West Surrey Samaritans’ volunteers provide confidential emotional support to people in distress  by phone, e-mail or text, or in person to visitors to our branch.  Our volunteers train prisoners to become listeners who can support other prisoners at Feltham Young Offenders Institute. In addition to those activities, our volunteers are constantly organising activities or taking part in community events outside the branch to raise awareness of the support service we offer and to raise much needed funds to keep the service running.   This poster reflects the non-confidential aspects of our activities and hopefully illustrates what a lively bunch of volunteers we have!
